Have you ever felt awkward when starting a conversation with someone you have just met at work? A simple question such as, “How is your day going?” or “Have you had lunch?” may seem like ordinary small talk. Yet, these seemingly simple conversations can be the starting point for building comfort, creating social connections, and strengthening relationships.
In the workplace, small talk serves a greater purpose than simply filling silence. Harvard Business Review highlights that small talk can help people feel more connected and support collaboration and creativity, particularly in increasingly virtual work environments. Harvard Business Review
Research published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin also suggests that interactions with “weak ties,” such as acquaintances or colleagues we are not particularly close to, can contribute to a greater sense of belonging and social well being. Even brief social interactions can positively influence how connected people feel. SAGE Journals
However, meaningful small talk is not simply about being able to talk more. A good conversation requires both people to participate, respond, and understand each other. This is what allows a short exchange to gradually become a stronger professional relationship.
Several skills play an important role in creating quality conversations: having the confidence to start, knowing how to ask relevant questions, and being willing to listen. Harvard Business Review also emphasizes the power of asking thoughtful questions to build rapport, encourage meaningful exchanges, and make conversations more productive. Harvard Business Review
Recognizing the role of communication in building stronger connections, Borwita held its Sharing is Caring Public Training session in September 2026, featuring the theme “PING! Say Something, Start Connecting: Ngobrol Dulu Nyambung Kemudian.”
Held virtually via Zoom on September 11, 2026, the session featured Fandi Firmansyah, Corporate Communication, as the speaker. Participants explored how meaningful workplace connections can begin with something as simple as starting a conversation, finding common ground, asking thoughtful questions, and actively listening.

The session also introduced practical approaches to opening conversations naturally, discovering common interests, keeping conversations flowing, and creating more comfortable workplace interactions.
For Borwita as a Distributor FMCG Indonesia with an extensive operational network, communication is not only about delivering information. It is also part of how people build trust, collaborate effectively, and create positive workplace experiences.
Because sometimes, meaningful connections do not begin with a big conversation.
They begin with a simple greeting, a thoughtful question, and the willingness to listen.
